15/8/2024 0 Comments Voice of CourageI recently went on a long bus trip to visit my sister. During the trip, I received a notification with some feedback about the speech I did at a hearing, to decision-makers about arts grants. I actually have two Soar Purpose blogs so sometimes it's hard to decide whether to write a blog post here (more arts focussed) or at the other blog (broader creative expression and mental health). Although they overlap. I had a very rough day with my mental health, so have been in hibernation in my room (hardly emerged). Very burnt out currently with a lot of recent triggers (PTSD). Feedback about my speech:I will attach screenshots of the feedback from Libby O'Brien, who works for the Taupo District Council (TDC) below: Thank you for the encouraging feedback, Libby. I also read the feedback out in the video (below). At the end of this blog post, I will link to other blog posts related to the art grants. I spoke up as someone with disabilities (classified as a mental injury). Speaking is very, very challenging for me (I didn't say a word for a month when I started school), and advocacy is exhausting. I frequently get burnt out with it. I am currently too exhausted to paint. I will try to have a break from speaking up about mental health and disability stuff, have a rest, go for some gentle walks and hopefully get back into painting. I aim to do at least one painting per month and I'm half way through one which I haven't had the energy to revisit yet. Fantail Rose is currently the most popular fine art print I have sold. The original painting, in memory of my Dad, is actually still available. It was with this painting, that I decided to take the step to start a hobby business. I paint as a form of expression and therapy. If I sell any artworks, it's a bonus. Related linksBlog post about speaking up about the value of the arts. Has a link to the original speech. Blog post about how art gave me a reason to live. Blog post when I decided I would make a submission and speak. About the solo art as therapy exhibitions I had (made possible with two small community arts grants). Some of my previous paintings (plus a few recent). My books, inspired by my experiences (highlighting the experiences of bipolar disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, autism spectrum features). Current original paintings for sale. Selection of fine art prints (I have a speciality fine art printer print each one as ordered). Feedback is that those who purchased a painting or print love them. I may accept the odd commission here and there. Charity FundraiserI am pleased to report that $300 was raised for a cat rescue charity. I donated a large Phoenix Kereru print for a raffle, plus donated proceeds of pet prints. 'Sanctuary', from a painting I did of a disabled cat, Calico, is the second highest selling print, since I started selling prints this year. I hear Calico has emerged from her bed and has been enjoying playing in her new home.
It was definitely an emotional experience painting both Fantail Rose and Sanctuary. Paint from the heart and soul, is what I believe. The fundraiser is ongoing with pet art (all proceeds of pet prints and a percentage from pet portrait commissions). There are currently three pet-themed prints to choose from (plus one original pet painting).
